SONiC – an open-source, containerized network operating system (NOS) that runs on a variety of ASICs and switch hardware. Dell Technologies and other suppliers are working to bring SONiC to SmartNICs and DPUs. Running a NOS on a SmartNIC/DPU in a server is a logical next step for SONiC where it can help data center performance by getting networking functions as close to the workload as possible. It will also help service providers, Telco’s, and large enterprises roll out new services in the cloud and at edge locations without the need for expensive, power-hungry, or purpose-built networking hardware.
