Silo

Silo – a software, and sometimes, hardware-defined container for data that is not generally available to other systems and has its own access and management protocols. For example, a tape library is a silo needing backup software or the LTFS file system to access data within it. A NAS filer cannot use its NFS or SMB/CIFS protocols to access data in a tape library. Where data is preserved for re-use in case of data loss, in, for example, a deduplicated backup target appliance, then that is viewed as a good thing. Where silo’d data is difficult to access, for analytics for example, when it could useful then that is viewed as undesirable and limiting.
