Quantum Myriad supports 122.9 TB SSDs and in-place system scaling

Quantum is adding incremental, in-place system scaling with dynamic, automatic data leveling to its Myriad all-flash file system, along with 122.88 TB Solidigm SSD support.

Myriad is a containerized, scale-out file system stack using key-value technology, based on NVMe SSD drives and supporting SMB and NFS protocols. The software provides inline compression and deduplication. It also supports Nvidia’s GPUdirect and has a parallel file system client. This, we’re told, is optimized for AI/ML model training and inferencing, high-performance computing (HPC) visualization and modeling, and video rendering workloads. 

The new scalability features is designed to let customers start with as few as five partially populated NVMe Storage Server nodes, then expand in increments of one or more nodes at a time with the additional storage available in minutes, with no need for admin intervention, and no impact or interruption to user operation. Quantum says customers will be able to continue adding nodes as their needs grow, increasing capacity while maintaining linear performance with automatic data leveling across all nodes as new Storage Server nodes are added.

The latest Myriad release adds support for 400 GbE RDMA infrastructure, up to ten NVMe Storage Server Nodes, and new drive options including 61.44 TB and 122.88 TB Solidigm D5-P5336 QLC drives. A server node takes up 1RU and holds up to ten NVMe SSDs. That means 1.23 PB of raw capacity using Solidigm’s 122.88 TB drives, with 80 percent usable via Myriad’s n+2 erasure coding. Support for 20-node configurations is coming and customers can upgrade in single-node increments.

Quantum says these new drives offer “extraordinary density,” and enable up to 6 PB in 5RU, meaning 5 Storage Server Nodes and 50 drives, and 12 PB in 10RU. It claims that “with Myriad’s automatic inline data compaction and deduplication that deliver up to 20x data reduction rate,” there could be 240 PB of effective capacity across 10 nodes and 480 PB with 20 nodes, “nearly half an exabyte … delivering astonishing density and reduction in rack space and operational costs.”

A 20x data reduction rate would indeed be astonishing. Quantum’s Myriad datasheet provides examples of effective system capacity at just 1.5x and 3x data reduction rates. Assuming a 1.23 PB raw capacity for a storage node, 80 percent usable would give us 983 TB usable. A 1.5:1 data reduction ratio would deliver 1.47 PB effective capacity, while a 3:1 ratio would provide 2.95 PB effective capacity per node. Ten such nodes would provide 29.5 PB effective capacity. Your mileage would obviously vary with the kind of data stored.

The new Myriad software release also provides partially populated NVMe Storage Server Nodes to allow more initial and expansion flexibility choices, starting with a minimum of four NVMe drives, with the remaining slots populated as needed. There is integrated archive and recall with ActiveScale to build high capacity data lakes. 

A future upgrade will deliver incremental, no-downtime scaling support of up to 20 NVMe Storage Server Nodes, and ultimately, virtually unlimited scalability with intelligent fabric leaf nodes, and with the same up to 80 percent usable capacity and n+m data protection across all nodes.
