Wear Leveling

Wear Leveling – the process inside an SSD of preventing heavily-used blocks of cells being worn out through high write rates by moving the data to less used blocks, and so equalising block wear rates across the SSD. The SSD controller maintains an erase count for each block. Incoming writes are directed to blocks with lower erase counts.
