NetApp will dedupe your EMC arrays; how kind

NetApp has announced that its V-Series controllers, which virtualize third-party storage arrays in a NetApp environment, can now dedupe EMC's arrays.
The V-Series runs NetApp's Data ONTAP OS which has the A-SIS sub-file-level deduplication technology included with it at no charge. By replacing redundant and repeated parts of files with pointers to master copies of those items, deduplication can reduce file sizes by up to 20:1 or more, depending upon the amount of redundancy.
NetApp says its A-SIS deduplication can be applied to primary storage arrays as well as to backup and archival storage.
The V-Series supports third-party arrays from Hitachi Data Systems, HP and others. NetApp says that these arrays can now be deduplicated with the V-Series. By buying a V-Series product customers can get maximum value from their current storage investments through better utilising storage capacity
Brendon Howe, NetApp's VP and GM for its NAS and V-Series Business Units, said, “By providing our V-Series customers with deduplication technology that spans from primary to archival data, they are able to better control their heterogeneous data growth while reducing costs and simplifying data management. ... this announcement is yet another example of the value provided by NetApp V-Series systems.”
By the end of 2008, all NetApp storage systems will include deduplication technology. The VTL product line is expected to have this capability announced fairly soon.
