Nintendo to add storage to Wii

'How' is not known

Nintendo is working 'on a range of solutions' to the generally perceived limited storage of its Wii game-playing console.

Wii owners downloading games find that there isn't enough storage on the hugely popular console to store all the games they want. It only has 512MB of flash memory for such storage.

In an interview here  Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said: "We have said publicly that we’re looking hard at the storage situation, that we’re working on a range of solutions. We have nothing to announce now. But certainly it’s an issue we are aware of and we’re working to find a solution and we will."

That suggests hard drive storage will arrive for Wii in the next few months. Another option would be to take advantage of the existing SD flash memory card slot and Wii's two USB ports. The Wii operating software (firmware) could be extended to support playing games from an external hard disk drive via the USB port or from games stored on devices with an SD card interface.

The Xbox 360  has a hard drive as does Sony's PlayStation 3.
