320GB of unreadable data - if it's lost or stolen

Buffalo has introduced a 2.5-inch, 320GB external hard drive with full disk encryption (FDE).

The MiniStation DataVault is comprehensively protected against shocks and stores 160 or 320GB in its 128-bit AES-protected interior. Buffalo says it operates instantly and has a 20 percent faster than normal TurboUSB interface for Windows XP users.

Ken Higgins, Sales VP at Buffalo Technology, said: "High performance hardware-based data encryption is the key ingredient to protecting portable storage drives, and as a storage market leader, it is our responsibility to provide our customers with innovative, reliable and highly secure storage solutions that easily, affordably and effectively safe guard priceless digital information.”

The drive is locked to access as soon as it is removed from the owner's computer.

It wehjs less than 8oz and measures 3.3" x 5.2" x 0.9", fitting into a purse or pocket. The device includes a wrap-around cable that easily snaps into place and powers the device. An additional cable is included for users with low USB power supply on their laptops or desktops. It comes pre-formatted for instant use and automatic data encryption; simply enter your own pass word into the device's built-in security tool, and data protection is a breeze.

The new MiniStation DataVault is Windows and Mac OS X compatible and includes mobile versions of Firefox Web browser and Thunderbird e-mail client so you can take your email and web favorites with you anywhere. It also includes Memeo AutoBackup software, which allows you to securely store, track and share digital content while simultaneously providing data management and back-up.

Backed by a limited three-year warranty and toll-free 24/7 technical support, the MiniStation DataVault is available this month and can be purchased through distributors, online resellers and Buffalo's web site. The product has an estimated street price of $129 for the 160GB and $209 for the 320GB.
