IDS believes hard drive market will shrug off SSD attacks
posted on 04 June 2008 15:19
Denying the ideas that SSDs are poised to take over whole swathes of the hard disk drive (HDD) market, in a recently-released study of the market, IDC states: "Flash-based solid state disk drives (SSDs) will curtail HDD demand in some markets, but the HDD industry will shrug-off these and other competing storage technologies to attain consecutive years of record-setting HDD shipments and revenue."
John Rydning, IDC's research director for hard disk drives, said: "Disk drive OEMs are very aware of the different competing storage technologies that exist today, and will exist in the future. They will rightly shrug-off these competing technologies for a later day, choosing instead to capitalize on the healthy and profitable opportunities that lie ahead in the hard disk drive industry."
Such a conclusion is quite different from ideas put out by EMC and SanDisk.
The study is entitled "Worldwide Hard Disk Drive 2008-2012 Forecast: Shrugging-Off Storage Technology Challengers (Doc #212231)" and can be purchased here for $4,500.
