HD mobile phones will need much more storage

Up goes the flash GB count

It's reported in Tech-On that mobile phone component manufacturers are interested in high definition (HD) video processing by mobile phones with a HD mobile phones coming as early as next year. They will need lots more storage.

Broadcom has an HDTV application processor as do both NVIDIA, which has prototyped an HD Mobile phone handset, and Texas Instruments. These chips can code/decode 1280 x 720 resolution HD video at 30fps. The power draw seems acceptable as the Broadcom chip uses 450mW for HDTV encoding.

NVIDIA's APX 2500 chip supports displays with SXGA (1280 x 1024) resolution and 12 megapixel cameras.

The HD phones will use an HDMI interface to play videos on a TV. Hoewever a new, small format, HDMI connector is needed and an HDMI manufacturer's group is working on this.

It is likely that HD-capable mobile phones will need double or even triple the amount if data storage they currently have.

Some more information here.
