Compellent to support SAS

Will add 2.5-inch drives too

Compellent is going to add support for 2.5-inch SAS drives in its Storage Center product line.

Currently only Fibre Channel and serial ATA (SATA) drives are supported, for performance and capacity applications respectively, in Compellent's storage area network (SAN) Storage Center product.

The word is that Compellent's drive array supplier, Xyratex, has a 2.5-inch tray product but is resolving issues that are preventing 2.5-inch SAS expansion trays being used. (NetApp faced the same problem when it first announced SAS support with SAS expansion trays being unavailable.)

Compellent and Xyratex are enthusiastic about the 6Gbit/sec SAS 2 standard as this means the little SAS drives wll out-perform 3.5-inch FC drives running at 4Gbit/s.

SAS support from Compellent is expected to be announced before the end of the year.
