No surprise: confidential company data at risk
posted on 22 April 2008 08:50
A UK government survey has found that unauthorized data access by outsiders is at four times the 2000 level and the average seriousness of incidents has increased.
The survey was carried out by PriceWaterhouseCoopers LLP for the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform.
Yuval Ben-Itzhak, CTO for secure web gateway products vendor Finjan, said this confirms his long-held belief that companies need to do more to protect their confidential data. Well, excuse us, but he would say that, wouldn't he?
He said: "This message is particularly true for the UK this year, now that the provisions of the Companies Act 2006 are due to come into force. As a result, issues such as corporate governance and best security practice guidelines are certain to become a hot topic in the months ahead."
"I especially found the conclusions of the report - specifically that 77 per cent of UK companies say that protecting their customer data is a very important driver of their IT security expenditure - to be highly relevant to our own market experience."
"Solutions to the problems of IT security are that companies should understand the security threats they are facing and take a pro-active approach to their security needs, so that they can prevent malicious code from stealing data using real-time content inspection technologies."
In short, buy Finjan products.
