Fujitsu vaults over Samsung

Fujitsu has announced the fastest 2.5-inch hard drive at the 320GB capacity point, spinning at 7,200rpm.

The MHZ2 BJ is a 2-platter drive, drawing just 2.3 watts, and becoming available in June. It is targeted at high-end notebooks and compact desktop PCs.

In comparison, Samsung's SpinPoint MP2, also a 2.5-inch, twin platter drive and spinning at 7200rpm as well only reaches a 250GB capacity point.

Score one to Fujitsu.

At the 500GB, 2.5-inch drive capacity level, Fujisu's product spins at 4200rpm - - whereas Samsung's SpinPoint M6 rotates at a faster 5,400rpm. Both are 3-platter units.

A draw overall, but it looks as if Fujitsu has an areal density advantage, for the time being, over Samsung, there being platter space to spare to reach 500GB with 3 platters.
