Brad Nisbet, IDC's research manager, said: "The disk storage systems market exited 2007 strong, indicating that data storage remains a crucial component to the successful execution of enterprise business. Despite the current, global economic uncertainties, the disk storage systems market is benefiting from a wide variety of drivers, ranging from the simple need to store ever-increasing volumes of business data to the more sophisticated objectives around consolidation, virtualisation, and ease of management."

NetApp appears to be poised to overtake Hitachi, however Hitachi's true figure will be higher as HP resells its product in its EVA line.

HP's growth rate is pretty flat, which underscores the recent ousting of a senior storage sales executive.

External disk revenues grew 9.8 percent year on year. However the total network disk storage market (NAS Combined with Open SAN) showed faster 15.8 percent year on year growth. EMC led with with 27.8 percent revenue share, then IBM - 15.4 percent - and HP - 12.5 percent.

Liz Conner, another IDC research analyst, said: "iSCSI continues to be prove its popularity in the market, ending 2007 on the upswing with revenue growth over 70%."
