Symantec has announced full disk encryption for fixed and remobable PC and laptop storage in its Symantec Endpoint Encryption product.
Symantec Endpoint Encryption is available in three formats: Symantec Endpoint Encryption; Symantec Endpoint Encryption – Full Disk Edition; and Symantec Endpoint Encryption – Removable Storage Edition. Symantec Endpoint Encryption – Full Disk Edition is the full disk encryption component designed to protect all data on the hard drive of Microsoft Windows-based machines. It allows IT administrators to encrypt the hard drive to protect information and prevent the exposure of sensitive data should a machine be lost or stolen. The encryption technology is designed to be transparent to the end user and performed with minimal performance impact.
Symantec Endpoint Encryption – Removable Storage Edition is the removable storage component that is designed to protect all data on USB, Firewire, Compact Flash, iPod, CD, DVDs, and other storage devices and removable media. It encrypts files defined by central policy and on the fly, when copied to removable media. Businesses of all sizes are able to maximize the productivity benefits of using removable storage devices while minimizing the risks these devices pose to data security.
Symantec Endpoint Encryption offers scalable, centralised management for easy deployment and administration. Customers may leverage existing tools through synchronisation with Microsoft Active Directory for group policy management. Symantec Endpoint Encryption meets government directives and regulations as the audit reporting capabilities help customers demonstrate compliance with regulatory requirements that mandate the use of encryption technologies to better protect data.
According to Symantec's Internet Security Threat Report, theft or loss of computer or other data-storage medium made up 46 percent of all data breaches that could lead to identity theft during the first six months of 2007.
