Scramble into Blu-ray starts
Blu-ray hold-out Universal Studios is holding out no more. American Gangster will be its last HD-DVD release and it will now support Blu-ray.
It was very pro-HD-DVD. An exec VP was even co-president of the HD-DVD Promotional Group.
But times change, it backed the wrong horse, move on.
What made it harder, probably, to back Blu-ray at all was that Sony was in the movie-making business too. Why should it help a competitor become stronger by having to license and use its distribution medium?
To that extent Sony made a rod for its own back.
