IBM claims HH LTO4 drive first - but is it?

posted on 18 February 2008 08:40

Quantum released its HH LTO4 in mid-January

IBM blogger Tony Pearson has put his best IBM foot foprward again - he does this admirably by the way - and claimed that "IBM is the first major storage vendor to offer the new HH LTO4 drives", adding, "which directly attach via 3Gbps SAS connections to your host servers. The HH models allows you to have two drives in the TS3100, and four drives in the TS3200."

I thought Quantum released its half-height LTO4 drive in mid-January?

Yes, read the release here. This was an availability announcement and not a will-be-available-in-the-future one.

Tony Pearson refers us to IBM's February 12 release, which states: "IBM is the first company in the storage industry to offer Ultrium 4 Half-High SAS half-high tape drives in entry automation, enhancing tape performance over the previous generation. "

Quantum does position its drive (image above) as being well-suited for data centre use and so, I suppose, IBM can claim to have announced the first 'entry automation' HH LTO4 drive. Some people might suppose that'a a pretty small claim really.

Both HH drives offer a SAS interface.
