EMC starting to compete with Dell?

SMB market competitors

According to the Inquirer EMC is ramping up its SMB channel operation in the UK. The outlet cites the recruitment of "40 sales people, nine reseller account managers and a channel recruitment drive which saw it recently sign up 40 resellers including four last week," but says it has been a long time coming.

Neither EMC nor Dell will want their partnership to fall apart as both make money from it. But, certainly on the iSCSI front, Dell's own products (thank you EqualLogic) compete in some markets with EMC's iSCSI arrays. If Dell expands the EqualLogic PS5000 products up or down scale - and it has said it will - then the latent competition there will become real.

EMC prizes Dell for its ability to resell EMC's Fibre Channel CLARiiONs.

The Fibre Channel bond should remain strong as it is unlikely Dell will dip into FC array manufacture. But if it starts sourcing FC arrays from non-EMC suppliers then the partnership would have the skids underneath it.
